107 m The Earth

Erwin Lejeune

Head of Robotics at SIRB.AI, in Abu Dhabi. Eight years in robotics, leading teams since 2021.

This page is one continuous zoom. Every power of ten goes closer in, and further back in time: from a swarm over Abu Dhabi today, down to where it started, in Nantes in 2014.

Scroll to dive. Drag the globe to turn it. The drones and chips on the way down are illustrations, not my hardware.

105 m The coast at Abu Dhabi

Feb 2026 – now SIRB.AI · Abu Dhabi

Head of Robotics

Founding team. I designed the robotics software architecture and the autonomy roadmap, then built a self-healing autonomy layer: swarm-wide fault and state recording, agents that detect and recover from failures, and ML-based mission scoring before launch.

I took the stack from prototype to public launch at UMEX 2026, unveiled as the Middle East's first AI-powered swarm platform.

سرب sirb is Arabic for a flock, or a swarm.

104 m Offshore, the swarm is a speck

2024 – now Unchained Labs · remote

Founder

Local-first AI agents that run on a company's own models, data and infrastructure. Kymatics, our graph-based agent orchestration, turns a spoken intent into a queue of build jobs.

How I use AI in engineering: it lets a team ship more without lowering the bar, and the real work is the harness around it. Every change goes draft, AI review, checks, a quiz on the diff, human review, ship, whoever or whatever wrote it.

102 m A swarm in formation

2024 – 2026 Technology Innovation Institute · Abu Dhabi

Team Lead, Robotics Software

I grew and led a team of 9 engineers across autonomy, infrastructure and platform integration, and overhauled the swarm autonomy architecture.

  • −74% onboard CPU
  • −52% network bandwidth
  • USD 10M+ in contracts

Joint program with Caltech on M4, their robot that flies and rolls, and their humanoid: outdoor planning and tracking for M4. Our demos to companies in Europe and the UAE led to the contracts above. I also started building AI tooling for the team.

101 m Inside the flock

2022 – 2024 Technology Innovation Institute · Abu Dhabi

Senior Engineer, Robotics Software

R&D of components for multi-robot behaviour orchestration, collaboration and control. I designed new swarm behaviours, including decentralized bird-inspired flocking, published at IEEE/RSJ IROS 2024.

I ran the live demos for partners. The project led to USD 3M in contracts.

Move your pointer through the flock. It's a toy model, not the paper's.

100 m One drone

2021 – 2022 Coalescent Mobile Robotics · Odense

Founding Robotics Engineer

The founding technical team that delivered the first working in-store robot, in a supermarket. I led the navigation stack (path planning, motion control, localization) and contributed to perception: detection, filtering, tracking.

When the CTO left, I led navigation and trolley detection: recruited and trained interns and a junior engineer, ran planning, and turned the CEO's requirements into sprints.

A real store changes your priorities fast.

10−1 m Its flight controller

2020 – 2021 Ecole Centrale de Nantes

Robotics Researcher

I led four research projects: multi-agent pathfinding, AI planning in PDDL, real-time ROS control on Xenomai/XDDP, and ROS 2 latency benchmarking. Two papers came out of it.

Also there: an M.Sc. in Control & Robotics (2019–2021). And, remotely for Hiventive, backend services in Go with PostgreSQL and Docker, plus an automated programming-test manager for candidate evaluation.

10−2 m The microcontroller

2019 Ingeniarius · Coimbra

Robotics Assistant

I built full autonomy stacks from scratch, with ROS and embedded systems.

  • 2 of 2 maze-solving competitions won, mapped and unmapped

10−3 m The silicon die

2018 – 2019 Hiventive · Bordeaux

Embedded Software Engineer

I built a SystemC/TLM virtual prototype of an STM32 microcontroller (its TIM, I2C, CAN, GPIO and USART peripherals) with QEMU integration.

Treat time, memory and bandwidth as a budget. Test against a model of the hardware first.

The lesson I kept. Alongside: an M.Sc. in Computer Engineering & Aeronautics at Ynov Bordeaux (2018–2019).

10−4 m The circuitry

2014 – 2018 Nantes Université

B.Sc. Electronics Engineering

The bottom of the zoom, and the start of the story. I came back to Nantes in 2019 for robotics, at Centrale.

Tap the circuitry: a planner finds a path through it.

Things I build on my own time

Each clip is a recording of the real project.

grip

A git hook that quizzes you on your own diff before you commit or push, grades the answers against a hidden rubric, and blocks anything below the pass mark.

PyMAPF

Multi-agent pathfinding on arbitrary graphs: CBS, PIBT, LaCAM, MAPF-LNS, plus multi-agent RL. The solvers stream their search live.

Kymatics Unchained Labs

Turns a spoken intent into a queue of build jobs, with local-first agents.

flybots

Multirotor, fixed-wing and VTOL flight physics from scratch, with 40+ runnable simulations and an RL gym.

rostree

Explores a ROS 2 dependency graph (a DAG, not a tree) from the CLI, a TUI, or a self-contained HTML file.

PythonPDDL

A dependency-free PDDL framework: hand-written parser and grounder, 14 planners, LM-cut and FF heuristics, and heuristics you can train.

roue

An offline file converter for the Linux desktop: Ctrl+Shift+right-click a file, pick a format on a wheel, and the result lands next to the original.

Clanker Labs

Self-host your home (notes, mail, media, passwords, money) on hardware you own, with an agent in front so it doesn't need a sysadmin.

Also

  • BTView A visual behavior-tree editor for BehaviorTree.CPP, inside VS Code and Cursor.
  • jarvis_ros2 Fault and recovery management for ROS 2 robots.
  • awesome-daily-minigames 281 daily puzzle games, listed.

Papers, open source, notes

Off the clock

Basketball, films, photography, and Clanker Labs, my self-hosted home with an agent running it. These are my photos.
